If you are referred for liver transplant, please read this

Understanding Liver Disease

The liver is the body’s chemical factory, responsible for digestion, detoxification, and maintaining overall health.

When it fails due to chronic illness or sudden injury, a transplant may be the only life-saving option.

Common reasons for liver transplant include:

  • Cirrhosis from alcohol, hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease
  • Acute liver failure (sudden collapse of liver function)
  • Inherited/metabolic conditions in children
  • Certain liver cancers

When is a Liver Transplant Needed?

Doctors recommend a transplant when:

  • Liver disease cannot be reversed with medicines or surgery
  • Symptoms such as jaundice, fluid in the abdomen, confusion, or repeated hospitalisations occur
  • Medical scores (like MELD/PELD) show high risk of death without transplant
  • In children, when growth and development are severely affected

Preparing for Transplant

If you or your child is being considered:

  • Evaluation: Detailed blood tests, scans, heart and lung checks
  • Choosing Donor Type: Living donor (family/friend) or deceased donor (waiting list)
  • Registration in TRANSTAN: After completion of the evaluation, we will register you in TRANSTAN so that you are active on the list.
  • Follow up: Counselling for patient and family will be provided. You need to be on activel follow up with the liver team while on the waiting list.

The Cost and Financial Planning

Liver transplant is a major procedure.

Costs include surgery, hospital stay, medicines, and donor care.

Approximate range: ₹ 22 L – ₹ 28 (varies by complexity and donor type). Delay in treatment and severe complications of liver disease increases the cost of liver transplant. Early surgery means less cost.
Insurance and government schemes may cover part or full cost.

What to Expect During Surgery and ICU Stay

Recovery does not end at discharge.

Success depends on lifelong care:

  • Medicines: Daily immunosuppressants to prevent rejection
  • Monitoring: Regular blood tests and scan.
  • Lifestyle: Healthy diet, exercise, avoiding alcohol and unsafe medicines
  • School & Work: Most children resume normal schooling; adults return to active life
